The Blogspot Marketing Workshop
Introduction
This is 'The Blogspot Marketing Workshop' section. This will be used as a central HUB where you will be able to find everything you need under one roof to rank your Blogspot blog high in search engine results. There will be a mixture of links leading to both articles I've created and articles other like-blog's have created also. There might even be a free download or SEO tool you can grab! This will be a step-by-step process where you will start from the very beginning of planning a blog and choosing a niche to the end where you will link build and hopefully make some money. The success rate of this process depends entirely on your effort, your commitment and your patience. Who knows, in six months time you too could be earning an online income! As my Grandad once said to me,
"It's not going to be easy; otherwise everybody would be doing it!"
The Beginning Of Blogspot Marketing
In this section we're going to take a look at securing the foundations of your Blogspot blog and the beginning of your Blogspot marketing experience. Estimated time: 1 week (estimate time, might do it quicker or slower) There is nothing to rush into. Choosing a subject, getting the keywords are very very important. If this is not done right, and the instructions found are not followed, your going to have a hard time ranking I'll tell you that.
Choosing a subject and purpose for you blog ~
This is your first step on the road to making a successful Blogspot blog, good-luck! Choosing the right subject is very important and is definitely the underlying foundations of what make a great, successful blog. I find this phase to be the hardest; and I'm lead to believe many people feel the same! From past experiences, I would definitely advise going into a subject you love. By doing this, you will hardly never run out of article ideas and chances are 6 months down the line you will still be highly motivated to carry on blogging, regardless of your success. I've included some recommended reading I personally believe will help you choose the right subject and purpose for your blog...

Amazon Ambush - This guide will show you how to create an online income with Amazon niches the gurus warned you to avoid. At under $5, it's well worth the read and will definitely help you choose a niche you can profit from. Wow, look at this woman's feedback after buying Amazon Ambush...
Your choice of keywords will be highly dependent on what type of viewing audience you will be targeting. For example, lets say I've made an Xbox 360 blog. If I wanted to target the information audience (for Adsense), I would most likely use keywords such as Xbox 360 help, Xbox 360 guide and Xbox 360 news. On the other hand, if I wanted to target the buyer audience (for Amazon affiliates), I would use keywords such as cheap Xbox 360 and Xbox 360 reviews as these are search terms that someone likely wanting to buy something would input into Google. I usually go for keywords that have around 5,000 searches per month with an easy-medium competition rating (using Google Keyword Tool).
For my keyword research, I use Stealth Keyword Digger by Alex Safie (you can find the link to his software in the recommended products section). It's great at finding keywords that are easy to rank for, extremely targeted to a particular audience and have a high search volume per month. It's especially effective at finding longtail keywords that...
Convert better – people typing in long tail keywords into Google are telling you EXACTLY what they need and if you can provide it to them your conversion rates go through the roof!
Easier to rank for - When you target long tail keywords you usually rank for them WITHIN DAYS and with far less backlinks.
From my personal experience, I've snapped up quite a few longtail keywords using Stealth Keyword Digger, some of which are bringing in an extra 1,000 searches per month, it's like magic! Seriously, it's well worth the money and will definitely help you with your keyword research.

Setting up a Blogspot blog for the first time ~
I just want to say quickly congratulations on getting this far with the Blogspot Marketing Workshop, keep it up! With Blogspot's new and intuitive user interface, I don't think you will have any problems setting up a new Blogspot blog, even as a new user! If you are struggling for any reason, Google's Help Center is a great place for FAQ's and guides that will help you with all your Blogspot qualms. You can also drop me an email and I'll see what I can do if it's anything Blogspot-related.

Choosing the perfect Blogspot theme ~
I think this phase of the Blogspot Marketing Workshop is by far the funnest. There is such a large selection of free Blogspot templates online nowadays, I sometimes don't know where to start. If there is anything I have learnt, always go for a template that's clean and looks professional. If your aim is to make an Adsense earning blog, you need to also consider where your going to place the advertisements and whether they have a chance to convert or not. I found a blog that breaks down the process of finding the perfect template for your blog depending on your niche and purpose (link can be found in the recommended resources section).

Choosing a manageable posting schedule ~
This is very important and is an area of blogging neglected by many! I recently made a post on Blogspot SEO that discusses the important of having a posting schedule, and how you can go about making one. It's well worth checking out.

Choosing the right domain name ~
I would recommend getting a domain name such as a .com, .net or .org. .info domains are also good, but if have decided to go for exact match domain (known as EMD for short), it won't be as effective as having a .com, .net or .org in SEO ranking. You can get a domain name cheap these days, and I believe it's a great way to show to Google that your serious about your Blogspot blog and you want it to rank high. With domain names, you have two choices...
EMD domain name - An exact match domain name is great when you know the audience and keyword you want to target. For example, for my Xbox 360 blog, I could have a domain name such as xbox360guides.com. If someone were to type Xbox 360 guides into Google, the likelihood of me being on the first page of results (with excellent content and on-page SEO) will be high. I always try and use EMD domain names, especially when I know I will be dealing with Amazon affiliates and physical product promotion.
Fun domain name - I don't know whether the term 'fun' should be used in this context. What I mean with this point, is that it's anything but an EMD domain name. For example, instead of having blogspot-seo.com as a domain name, I could have gone for something such as nathans-seo.com instead. This is probably best if you want to make a personal blog where promotion isn't necessarily at the forefront as the designed purpose of your blog.
As domain registrars go, I have always used NameCheap. Domains start at just $2.48 per year with free WHOIS guard protection. I hate WHOIS with a passion! If you don't know already, if you don't have WHOIS guard protection on any of your domain addresses, they have access to all your personal details such as name, house address and phone number. This is published on their website for everyone to see publicly. Usually domain registrars charge you an $5 for WHOIS guard protection, NameCheap do it for free.

Posting for the first time ~
Your first post is important, because it sets the tone for the blog and tells the readers what your setting out to achieve, or maybe what problem your trying to solve. Here are some guidelines I've picked up and tell people that ask me the question 'What should my first blog post be about?' Your first post should include...
Who you are - You need to tell your audience a bit about yourself such as personal life, maybe even a picture or two. The more information your willing to share about yourself, the easier it will be for the reader to trust you.
What are your intentions to blog about - Spell out the content on your blog so that your reader knows what to expect and whether to carry on visiting the blog. It can also act as a guideline to keep you focused on what your original goals were. Fair enough you know your goals now (making your first post), but will you still know them 6 months down the line.
How can the reader leave feedback - Tell the read how they can get involved. Are they able to leave comments? Do you encourage comments? What about email? Feedback is great and is definitely a way to keep you motivated. Make sure that every bodies feedback is appreciated, encourage it and they will be back again and again and again!
If your first post matches these outlines, you are on for a winner!

On-page SEO Factors
Implementing META HTML tags ~
Blogspot have recently updated their user interface and made the whole platform a whole lot more SEO-friendly. Before this time, you had to delve into the source code to add META information, now it can all be done from the options panel! By using a META description tag (the important one) effectively, it will help with SEO and act as a brief overview of what your blog contains; attracting like-minded people that will be more interested and inclined to visit your Blogspot blog.
Recommended Resources:
Making use of H1, H2 and H3 tags in your articles ~
H1, H2 and H3 HTML header tags are very important as far as on-page SEO is concerned. They are used by search engines (such as Google) as a means of highlighting certain areas of the article that are of importance and give a generalised description of what an article is about. The problem with the Blogspot platform is that majority of the time, these are not included. I not long ago posted an article that list's down step-by-step instructions on how to add H1, H2 and H3 HTML header tags to all your articles (the link can be found in the resources section).

Changing article and page URL stubs for better SEO ~
Unlike in WordPress, the Blogspot platform unfortunately doesn't allow the user to change the outcome of a URL stub. A URL stub looks like this if you're unsure (it's the section highlighted maroon-red):
www.yourblog.com/2012/01/blogspot-seo-help
If you've never really thought about this before, you will find all your URL stubs are an exact match of your original article title. So if you named your article 'How To Promote Your Blog And Make It Successful' then it will look something like this:
www.yourblog.com/2012/01/how-to-promote-your-blog-and/
This is really rubbish for SEO! By using my little trick, you will be able to cut out the useless words (to,and,it) and make all your Blogspot URL's SEO-friendly. When I applied this to all my latest articles, I seen a dramatic rise in search engine rankings and to this day believe it helped me get a PR 1. Look at the outcome:

Making use of image ALT HTML tags in your articles ~
How are you finding the Blogspot Marketing Workshop so far? Drop me a message and let me know! Optimising images is very important in on-page SEO. Introducing ALT HTML tags to your images is an easy, two second fix and can really boost your Blogspot SEO and ranking in the search engines. Google in particular loves ALT image tags, they advise the use of ALT text for all images. Blogspot recent update means you don't need to mess around with any source code; an option in the image preferences allows you to input ALT HTML tag easily. It's all explained in an article I've previously made, check it out in the resource section.

Set yourself up with FeedBurner ~
I have to admit, this has got to be one of the best thing's I've ever implemented on my Blogspot blog! It's never really helped me with on-page SEO so to speak, but aided me in connecting with my audience. As of now, I have over 100 FeedBurner subscribers who receive my latest Blogspot posts and promotions. It's not as flexible as an emailing service such as Aweber, but for free, who can complain. When you mix this with a pop-up box (requesting the visitor to join your FeedBurner list for a free product or eBook), you will start seeing sign-ups as soon as you have traffic coming to your blog. Guides for adding a pop-up box requesting sign-ups and setting up a Feedburner feed can be found in the resource section, I hope you find them helpful!

Implementing your chosen keywords effectively in your articles ~
I always make sure I have around 1-1.5% keyword density and that I insert my chosen keyword in the article title, first sentence of the article and last sentence of the article. Then again, after the latest algorithm update by Google (Penguin), do we need to worry about keyword density? I recently purchased a product called Penguin Panda Knockout Code that shows you natural techniques to rank your website or blog high that is also immune to any future algorithm updates Google does. The key to it all is just being natural, and Penguin Panda Knockout Code shows you how! This is what some people have said about this product...

NOT THIS ONE. This book, although short and to the point, is a MUST HAVE for everyone involved in SEO. I'm not big on hyperbole or exaggeration, but I can honestly say this is the best SEO ebook I've bought all year. Thanks! |
